Hi All,
Wivenhoe Cycle Route
Essex County Council (ECC) has secured £250,000 from the University of Essex in Colchester, to deliver a cycle route between Wivenhoe and the University. This scheme forms part of the requirements contained within the Planning Permission for the University’s new multi-storey car park. Five options have been proposed and ECC is now asking for our comments in a public consultation exercise.
It is important that as many people as possible respond to this consultation and complete the questionnaire it contains. Please pass this email on to any other cyclists you know. Full details of the options being proposed, and the questionnaire, can be found at www.essex.gov.uk/WivenhoeCycleRoute<http://www.essex.gov.uk/WivenhoeCycleRoute> and route details also by following the links below.
Colchester Cycling Campaign (CCC) has formulated its views and recommendations which I have detailed below. But please consider the options and express your views in the questionnaire.
Route 1 -- www.essexhighways.org/Uploads/Files/wivenhoe_cycle_route_doc_option1_dwg1.pdf www.essexhighways.org/Uploads/Files/wivenhoe_cycle_route_option1_dwg2.pdf www.essexhighways.org/Uploads/Files/wivenhoe_cycle_route_option1_dwg3.pdf
Full re-alignment of existing carriageway to construct a 3m wide shared cycle path and Toucan crossing.
This must, in CCC's opinion, be the preferred route, but because of the cost and funds available, if this was chosen, we would probably get nothing in the foreseeable future unless significant additional funding was found. As this is unlikely we may possibly loose the S106 funding from the University, and end up getting nothing.
Route 2 -- www.essexhighways.org/Uploads/Files/wivenhoe_cycle_route_option_2_Sheet1.pdf www.essexhighways.org/Uploads/Files/wivenhoe_cycle_route_option_2_Sheet_2.pdf www.essexhighways.org/Uploads/Files/wivenhoe_cycle_route_option_2_Sheet_3.pdf
Land acquisition on western side from properties to construct a 2.5m shared cycle path and Toucan crossing.
This we consider is the preferred route, being straight alongside the road, even though it is substandard in width at 2.5M. CCC considers that with the likely pedestrian use, the 2.5M width will be adequate. With its direct nature being straight along the roadside and not round the houses, this would provide a good route for cyclists.
Route 3a -- www.essexhighways.org/Uploads/Files/wivenhoe_cycle_route_option_3a_Sheet1.pdf
Route around the back of existing properties to construct a 3m wide shared cycle path.
This provides the ideal 3M width, is adjacent to the carriageway but goes round the back of the houses. Being less direct, the round the houses section would be dark at nights and more prone to build up of detritus.
Route 3b -- www.essexhighways.org/Uploads/Files/wivenhoe_cycle_route_option_3a_Sheet2.pdf
Route around the back of existing properties to construct a 3m wide shared cycle path.
Like 3a, 3M wide and round the back of the houses, but set into the field a little away from the carriageway. The same comments apply as with 3a, but 3b is considered to be marginally preferred.
Route 4 -- www.essexhighways.org/Uploads/Files/wivenhoe_cycle_route_option_4.pdf
Re-align existing Public Right of Way (PROW) to provide a 3m wide shared cycle path through the fields.
This cuts across the fields and could be seen as remote, particularly at night. It has many twists and is 'like a dogs hind leg'. It also relies on side streets to get back to the main road and passes Broomgrove school where there may be conflict with parents, children and cars dropping off children. This route is also likely to be more undulating! CCC strongly oppose this route.
Please consider our comments and complete the consultation questionnaire.
